Women in Aviation – German Chapter Mounts Photo Exhibition

Women in Aviation, International chapters are busy again. The WAI German Chapter has mounted its largest and most ambitious project to date, a worldwide traveling Photo Exhibition titled: Women in Aviation.

This traveling exhibition,  organized in cooperation with its parent organisation Women in Aviation, International (www.wai.org) is set to be featured at airports throughout the world in the coming months.

Mariola Ziolkowski, President of the Deutschland Chapter of WAI says, "The objectives of the traveling exhibition are to have a traveling historical exhibition that shows the amazing development of the aviation industry in the last 100 years (we include information about the development of aircraft and airports), and to raise awareness about the important role women have played in the development of aviation."

She continues, explaining, "We aim to encourage many more women to consider aviation as a career and to continue their journey right to the top of our industry as well to encourage women to be more confident in applying for top managers positions. In the exhibition we include information about famous women from the aviation industry."

Ziolkowski also hopes that the exhibition will encourage international tolerance and understanding.

There is a fundraising element to the project. "All funds collected during the project will be directed towards encouraging first education and then a focus on aviation careers for socially deprived children by awarding scholarships to help them achieve developments along career paths approved by Women in Aviation," she says.

The exhibition will be launched this week in Dubai, UAE, during the Emerging Market Airport Awards (http://www.arabianreach.com/emaa) in conjunction with Airport Suppliers Conference 2013.

From the 15 of February it will be at Terminal 2, Frankfurt International Airport, followed by Bucharest, Moscow and Vilnius and other airports.

Individuals and or companies are most welcome to contribute or help sponsor this project. Want to know where a WAI Chapter is located near you? Navigate to http://wai.org/chapters/chapter_current.cfm

  2. Women in Aviation Exhibition at Henri Coanda Bucharest International Airport.

After the successful event at Frankfurt Airport the exhibition moved to Henri Coanda Bucharest International Airport. The opening ceremony was on 8th of March – 10am.
You can visit the exhibition until 24th March.2013

Participants from different countries met and highlight the role women play and have played in aviation.

The exhibition is supported by Bucharest Airports National Company.
Bucharest Airports National Company started its activity at 11th of February 2010 by the merger of Henri Coanda Bucharest International Airport with Bucharest Baneasa – Aurel Vlaicu International Airport.

Bucharest Airports National Company is processing over 70 percent of the air traffic in Romania; In 2012, the two airports of Bucharest registered 7,55 million passengers (+ 1,5% compared to 2011) and 98.600 landings and take-offs.
In November 2012 the New Departures Terminal of Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport was officially open. This terminal is 19.600 sq.m and it doubles the capacity of the airport.

The main sponsors of the exhibition in Romania are:

    TAROM AIRLINE – www.tarom.ro

    PHILOT SHOP - www.PILOTSHOP.RO

    EMERGENCY AIRFREIGHT SYSTEMS – www.easi.ro

PHOENICIA GRAND HOTEL**** and chain of hotels in Romania- www.phoenicia.ro

Information and photos about Romanian Women in Aviation was collected with the support of Alexandru Bartoc. He also will present several interesting exponats during the exhibition.

The exhibition has a number of objectives:

Primarily it is to encourage women to take up careers in aviation or aviation related industries.

The show will highlight the role women have played in aviation and it is hoped to inspire young women to consider aviation as a career route. Any surplus generated from the tour will be devoted to a scholarship fund, open to both men and women, who can apply for support for study and training grants.

The exhibition will also highlight the poor track record of the aviation industry in attracting, retaining and promoting women to senior roles.
Research complied by Best Aviation Jobs shows that only 4% of airline CEO's worldwide are women, whilst a mere 2% take on the role of Chief Operating officers.

Separately, it is emerging that women are reluctant to apply for senior positions within the aviation industry. The predominantly male environment, previous experience of recruitment processes and a lack of confidence in them all play a part in suppressing the amount of applications for senior positions from female aviation professionals.

Exhibition organiser Mariola Ziolkowski said: "We plan to take this exhibition around the world in the coming years and in doing so, promote the industry to women and also remind companies and aviation related government institutions that they must do more to promote gender equality in what is a predominantly male industry. We also plan to invest any surplus from sponsorship into a scholarship fund aimed at supporting the training and study for women, and men interested in careers in aviation."
